TED Presentations on Creativity by Ben A. Ratje

Are you interested in how to become more creative?

At TED, many of the world's most creative people
come together to share their ideas with each other.

TED Conference is one of the places to get the best ideas
in my opinion. I watch it a lot and so do many other
experts I know.

Here are a couple of the presentations I know you will
be interest in:

Sir Ken Robinson: Do schools kill creativity?

Tim Brown: The powerful link between creativity and play

Amy Tan: Where does creativity hide?

What It Means to Be An Entrepreneur/Innovator by Ben A. Ratje

I recently saw a video on Peter Shankman's
blog which I check out every now and then.

http://www.shankman.com

Shankman called his entry: "WHY I DO WHAT
I DO" and the answer can be found in the video.

As for myself, I felt the same way.

Have a look and see if it also describes why YOU
do what you do (or want to do):

Wallstreet Movie Presentation (or how to use a mic) by Ben A. Ratje

During my corporate workshops I'm often asked:
"How can I use a mic effectively?"

Michael Douglas gives a perfect example in one
of the best movie presentations ever in his movie
'Wallstreet':

Michael, like most persuasive presenter, easily walks
around with a mic in his one hand.

Most poor presenters hide behind the podium while talking
into the microphone. Doing so creates a distance between
them and their audience.

This is what I also call the "I-hide-behind-the-podium-
and-talk-to-the-mic-not-the-audience" syndrome. It
is one of the best ways to send your audiences to sleep.

Whenever you have to use a microphone, put it in
your hand and comfortably walk the room while
presenting.

That way you show that you not only have confidence,
but will also show your audience that they are your
focus.

Have you ever tried wakeboarding? by Ben A. Ratje

I love wakeboarding!

Two years ago was the first time I tried
it, and immediately fell in love with it.

I believe wakeboarding is one of the
ultimate fun and lifestyle sports for
summer.

The excitement, the adrenaline. Plus, the
great time you can spend with friends.

Similar to snowboarding, the first session
might be a little painful.

The first time I tried it, it took me over
15 minutes before I was able to ride the
water without falling down (in the first
15 minutes I must have fallen a thousand
times or so ^^).

Last year I mastered many of the basics,
so this year I will start jumping. Wish me
luck!

In case you've never tried wakeboarding,
give it a shot this summer. It is less dangerous
than it looks and you will for sure get at least
a fun story to tell friends about.

Have a look at some professional wakeboarders
(don't try this out at home):

The only question left: when and where can
you try it out?

P.S. The picture above is me from last year.
I was riding next to the boat. What a blast!!!

3 Must-Read Books for Entrepreneurs (and those who want to be) by Ben A. Ratje

What do the most successful entrepreneurs know
you don't?

Here are the 3 books I strongly recommend if you
want to become more successful with your business
(or if you want to start one):

1. The Star Principle by Richard Koch

Richard made 100+ million pounds using the principle he
teaches in this book. This book will help you chose
the right business opportunities (and you will figure
out if you're in the wrong business).

2. The E-Myth Revisited by Michael Gerber

Michael will give you the mindset to automate your
business. You will learn the #1 biggest mistake
people make who start in their own business.
This book shows you how to take a quantum leap.

3. The 4-Hour Workweek by Timothy Ferris

What's your business worth if you don't know how
to enjoy your life?! Tim shows you how to outsorce,
cut hours and create the lifestyle you want.

Master Marketer Seth Godin by Ben A. Ratje

Marketing matters!

Having worked myself in marketing, sales
and partially advertising, I can say with
certainty: It's an absolute MUST for your
success!!!

Without proper marketing your products or
services will be a success and neither will
you.

Especially if you have your own business (or
want it someday in the future) marketing is
the one area you will not be able to delegate
for the most part.

The question is just who do you learn from
about marketing?

Even though I've read lots of books and taken
lots of workshops on the topics, there are only
a few people I will listen to (because many of
them I believe simply aren't good enough).

One of the few people I recommend to learn
from about marketing is Seth Godin.

(BTW, when I say learn from I'm talking to
young and old. I don't think you can be too
old or too young to continue learning about
marketing)

His blog is the most famous marketing blog
(a marketer who makes his own blog No. 1,
how is that for credibility) on the planet full
of great tips.

http://sethgodin.typepad.com/

Besides being a great marketer, Seth is also
a pretty strong presenter.

Have a look at a presentation he gave at TED
and another one he gave at GOOGLE:

Too Many Presentation Are a Waste of Time! by Ben A. Ratje

Most presentations are nothing but a chit-chat.

Sad…but true!

After most presentations, no audience takes action.

Imagine after Obama’s presentations no one voted for him.

Imagine after JFK’s moon speech no one did anything.
(Armstrong wouldn’t have his big moment)

Imagine after Steve Jobs giving one of his product presentations

no one goes out and buys the next iPod or Mac.

It would have been a waste of their and their audience’s time.

EVERY presentation needs to lead to some sort of ACTION.

One way to do so is to simply tell your audience at the end of

your presentation SPECIFICALLY what they should do.

If you want to take it one step further, you can ask your audience

to write those action steps down. Another way is to give them

printous with the action steps you want them to take.

Get your audience to take action after your presentation –

WHATEVER IT TAKES! (...make it worth their while and yours!)

The Lazy Way to Presentation Slides! by Ben A. Ratje

Have you heard of www.slideshare.net yet?

It’s a website that gives you the opportunity to share

and find (yes, also download) slides.

SlideShare currently has 8 million members, so it’s a

good opportunity to find LOTS of slides, or share your

slide with LOTS of people.

Just for your protection: Many of the slides on there

sadly are old-school and out-of-fashion.

A few though are very nice and good to use. Here is

one example (it's not the best but it's pretty good):

http://www.slideshare.net/darmano/thinking-visually-presentation

I recommend you first learn about proper slide design

from either the book ‘Presentation Zen’ by Garr Reynolds

or my book ‘Presentation Latte’.

Either one will give you an understanding of looking for

‘proper’ slides.

Happy slidesharing!

Presentation Zen by Ben A. Ratje

Do you know the No. 1 Presentation blog in the world?

(no, it’s not this one…at least not yet… ;-))

If you are really into presentation, chances are you

probably heard about it:

Presentation Zen by Garr Reynolds, who is also the

author of the bestselling book with the same title.

http://www.presentationzen.com/

Garr’s blog is focusing more on presentation slide

design, and also offers lots of other great information

about presentation. I strongly recommend you read

his blog and read his book!

The funny thing is too, that Garr is kind of my neighbor.

When I first heard about the blog, I thought “Zen???”,

just to figure out a few minutes later that he actually

lives in Japan (which is not too far away from Korea

where I live in case you didn’t know).

So, I’m sure I will meet him someday in Japan.

He seems like a really great guy and from his blog and

his book I can tell we share more than just our passion for

presentation.

Also, have a look at the presentation Garr gave to

google. I’m sure you can learn a lot from it:

P.S. Which successful people will YOU meet this year?

The Anti-Worry Presentation! by Ben A. Ratje

One of my all time favorite books is ‘4-Hour Workweek’
by Tim Ferris, who I HIGHLY admire.

Using Tim’s strategies I decreased my work time while

maximizing my results, and overall have a far more FUN
lifestyle. (I still read part of his book weekly)

Tim’s blog is an outstanding source of fun and exciting

information to help you create your ultimate lifestyle.

http://www.fourhourworkweek.com/blog/

His latest post is about a great inspirational speaker

and amazing human being: Nick Vujicic.

Have a look at the video, Tim’s recommends (his mother

send it to him):

Live or Die! 3-Minute Presentations! by Ben A. Ratje

Sometimes in life all you have are 3 minutes to pitch

people your ideas.

This especially often happens when it comes to getting

investors for you product or a company you want to

start.

It can also be that you need to give a short presentation

to your team or the board or pitching a client or in many

other high-pressure situations.

They will give you a few minutes to pitch your idea and

based on what they hear, they want to meet you again

and discuss investing in you.

If you have ever watched the TV show ‘Dragon’s Den’

(which I highly recommend) you know what I mean.

Have a look at one example:

The bad news is that these type of presentations are

probably the most nerve-wrecking of all.

The stakes are high and all you have are 3 minutes to win.

The good news are that if you can convince your audience,

the payoff is usually very high.

Either you get the big investment, or the contract, or the

agreement. Either way, you WIN! And you win BIG!

Here are just a few tips we can give you for now:

1. Rehearse, rehearse, rehearse – most people fail, because

they don’t practice.

2. Include props, visuals, etc in your presentation to make

it more attractive (BUT only the most important ones)

3. Project a friendly, go-getter personality (I hope you are

like that anyway)

4. Give them the numbers, the nitty-gritty (again ONLY the

most important ones)

5. Do NOT go over time! You will lose trust and respect from

the person in front of you (most successful people are VERY

time conscious).

Planned Your 2009 Presentations Yet? by Ben A. Ratje

One of my easiest tips for becoming a Persuasive
Presenter
iss very simple: Give MORE Presentations!!!

It actually doesn’t matter if each one becomes a hit
or not.
What matters is that you learn something everytime.

Think about the following examples:

1. Jack gives 3 presentations in 2009.

2. Tina gives 3 PTs PER MONTH (=36) in 2009.

Who has a clear advantage? Tina of course.

For Jack to gain the experience that Tina
got would take
him 12 years. 12 YEARS!!!

YOU decide how fast you become great at presentation.

YOU are the one to turn your into a Persuasive Presenter
(…or not).

My suggestion: Schedule a presentation a week in 2009.

Who can you present to?
Coworkers or bosses or employees
(very official), family
members, friends, visit a Toastmasters
presentation club
www.toastmasters.org (to find a club near you).

Give short presentations. Even 3 minutes.
(increase it over
the year, as you become more confident)

After each presentation ask yourself:

a. What did I do well?

b. What can I learn and improve for next time?

If you really do this, and improve something every time, you
have good chances to become
one of the best presenters
in your field within one year.

So one more thing to do: Get out your scheduler right
now,
make some phone calls or announcements and
set up your
presentation plan for 2009.

Are you ready to become a leading presenter in your
field?

My 7 Book Recommendations for YOU for 2009 by Ben A. Ratje

Are you ready to move to the next level in 2009?

Then it’s probably time for some new books that will

help you and guide you along the way.

All books I recommend are from people who live and

do what they preach. No theorists allowed.

1. The 4-Hour Workweek – Tim Ferris

Tim’s book has helped me have more fun in life,

work less while achieving more, and most importantly

showed me more possibilities for my life. You will like it!

2. Secrets of the Millionaire Mind – T. Harv Eker

Harv is the money master! This book will help you

gain the necessary mindset that all rich people share.

I reread this book at least 3 times a year.

3. E-Myth Revisited – Michael E. Gerber

Michael gives the blueprint for building a business

that runs without you. Would you be interest in

creating the next multi-billion empire? The E-Myth

is a MUST!

4. The Way of the Superior Man – David Deida

An entertaining read for both men and women

about how to deal with the other gender in love

and relationship. Highly practical and fun!

5. The Winners’ Laws – Bodo Schaefer

Bodo (the German gentleman who inspired me

to become a full-time trainer many years ago)

writes about the timeless laws all winners share.

6. Living the 80/20 Way – Richard Koch

Richard shows the way to save time and only do

what you enjoy to do. I believe it’s the single most

important book to gain REAL FOCUS for your life!

7. Presentation Latte™ – Ben A. Ratje

Yes, I know this is a little biased, but so many people

loved my book, so it’s their opinion not mine. This

book will help you get in the top 1% of all presenters

in the world and leave 99% behind.

Happy reading!!!

Artificial Intelligence Presentation (Ray Kurzweil)! by Ben A. Ratje

Are you interested in A.I. (artificial intelligence)?

If yes (at least a little bit), you will find the TED presentation
from Ray Kurzweil very interesting.

Ray is the NY Times bestselling author of ‘The Singularity is Near’
which will come out as a movie in 2009 (believe it or not, starring
Success Coach Tony Robbins in a main role).

Bill Gates, Microsoft founder, calls Ray “the best person I know
at predicting the future of artificial intelligence”.

I strongly recommend you watch the whole video where Ray
presents his theory.

On Wikipedia, I figured out, that he says that in the year 2045 we
will make a quantum leap in intelligence like never before.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technological_singularity

One thing to realize from his presentation (besides the fact that
the contents is highly interesting) is that he is NOT the best
presenter, BUT his passion for his topic really makes up for that.

Passion will also make your presentation shine!

Joker’s Oscar Speech? by Ben A. Ratje

Have you watched the latest Batman movie
‘The Dark Knight’?

If not, I strongly urge you to do so.

The movie is rated as No. 5 on IMDb, the world’s
largest movie database (at the moment I’m writing
this blog).

One of the main reasons the movie is so incredible is
because of Heath Ledger who is playing the JOKER.

Unfortunately, Heath passed away shortly after the
movie.

Insiders and movie fans alike are convinced that the
last role of his life will bring him the OSCAR at the
next Academy Awards (I think so too).

In the movie, Heath as the Joker gives an amazingly
persuasive presentation which is called “The Pencil
Trick” scene.

When you watch the video, focus on 4 things:

a. His attention-grabbing introduction
b. His body language (especially his persuasive eyes)
c. His vivid language (all words are pictures)
d. His conclusion (extremely convincing!)

Amazing presentation. Amazing actor.

Happy New Year 2009!!! by Ben A. Ratje

I know, I know. I’m a little late with my wishes for 2009.

Anyway, I wish you the best for this year: bigger success,
more money, more influential relationships, more fun,
more joy, more passionate experiences!!!

But I also with you something else: LESS stress, LESS
worry, LESS clutter, LESS stuff (yes, you read correctly;
most of your things are actually holding you back), LESS
negative relationships, LESS worry about the current
economical situation.

Here is my simple step system for you to get ready for
the new year in 10 minutes or less:

1. Write down 5 things you want (REALLY meaningful goals)
2. Write down 3 things you do NOT want to do anymore

(the following steps go beyond 10 minutes)

3. Get a close friend and do the same with him or her
4. Take MASSIVE action!!! (stop thinking and act on your goals)
5. Check with your friend on each other’s progress once a week

Hope you get MORE of the good stuff, and less of the bad
Stuff this year!
